Myasthenia Gravis - Bad day (exacerbation of symptoms) versus good day (asymptomatic.)
Myasthenia Gravis (MG) comes from Greek meaning “grave weakness.” It’s an auto-immune, neurological disorder that often manifests through diplopia (double vision) to women reaching their 3rd decade and men in their 5th.
Generally, the weakness begins in the eyes, causing the diplopia and sometimes ptosis (eyelid droop.) Ocular MG remains only in the eyes. Generalized MG, if it develops, often manifests itself within the first year or two of the initial symptom onset.
Generalized MG effects people in different ways, from weakness in limbs, breathing and general fatigue, but usually always effects the strength of the skeletal muscles. It’s a rare disease, with an estimation of 1 in every 10,000 with it, and possibly more, due to the changing and evolving symptoms. People with MG are often misdiagnosed and fail to get a proper diagnosis for an average of 3 years.
I was told that it was all in my head. I was told that I probably had a stroke. I was told that it would go away on it’s own.
My current symptoms are fatigue, trouble standing, trouble with my hand grip, ptosis of the left eye, diplopia, trouble swallowing, and slurred/coarse speaking.
Next month is June, which is Myasthenia Gravis awareness month. It’s also my birth month. Instead of any gifts, I’m asking for people to spread awareness of this disease and donate if possible.
